An FWT Outplacement Example

In our line of work, we see different types of outplacement situations. Sometimes an employer will do a massive layoff – letting many people go at once due to some type of business decision. This could be caused by financial hardship or, in some cases, an employer moving the business to a new city or country. Many people associate the word, “outplacement”, with a large number of cuts at once, but we include individuals being laid off into the equation as well. Here’s an example where Laurie Williams, a FutureWorks Outplacement Consultant, was hired by the employer doing the layoffs to assist this Senior Mechanical Development Engineer working in the manufacturing industry after being given his notice.
A Mechanical Development Engineer with twelve years Canadian experience and intermediate English skills was laid off from a manufacturing position with 12 months severance. This individual was concerned that his skills had not kept up pace with his colleagues in other companies.
After some discussion with Laurie, the client decided to take a short course at a well recognized school in the US in order to upgrade his skills and to make himself more marketable in the local economy.
Upon his return from the training, a position became available with a company where he had an ex-colleague. With some coaching from our outplacement consultant, the individual contacted the company – letting them know of his interest in the posted position.
With the ex-colleague’s support and a series of six job search workshops (we do the workshops, too!) behind him – including targeted resumes, cover letters and effective interviewing skills, the individual applied for the position.
This individual had a series of interviews with the company he was interested in, as well as interviews with other companies. After discussing the offers with the Laurie (and practicing his salary negotiation skills with her) this Senior Engineer landed an enhanced package with the company of his choice. He started working with his new employer a full ten months ahead of severance.
In other words, here’s what this individual had to say about his experience with us:
“…FutureWorks helps people to identify their competencies and weaknesses in order to re-market themselves to fit the current employment market. During the job application process, FutureWorks provided coaching for understanding the job description and highlight what was needed and what was important. During the interview process FutureWorks helped me to be well prepared for possible questions and answers. During the final selection and offer stage, FutureWorks provided some critical help to help me think of which option is the best for me.”
